Welcome To Our Club

Captains Report February 2012

We were welcomed to Alexander Country Club by a beast of an Easterly wind, which made playing conditions tough. Due to all the recent rains the rough is thick, but in general the course is in very good condition. I would like to thank Alex for their hospitality and for allowing us to make use of their facilities. Due to Gary Player I was unable to play with Club Captain Shirwin Pillay, but I left him in the capable hands of Rob Cummings. Thank you Sherwin for the kind words at prize giving, it makes Nomads proud to hear that we are appreciated for the work we do in the Border region.

Thank you to our monthly sponsor Windmill Roadhouse who have not only been a loyal sponsors of Nomads, but also a popular pit stop for those of us leaving prize giving a little later than usual. Your support of the local community is much appreciated.

This was the first game of Gary Player combined with the Old Mutual International pairs. Thanks to the good support from all our Nomads and visitors we were able to field 35 pairs in the OMIPSA day. Well done to Litha Solombela, Sam Thiso, Craig Sinclair and yours truly who will be representing Border Nomads at the regional finals in Port Elizabeth. Well done to Stuart on organizing the event and managing to fill the Gary Player field.

I had the privilege of awarding Neville Wilkins with his 20year tie. Well done on achieving this milestone, “Grumpy”. Nev was particularly grumpy on Sunday, as he had the honor of being one of the “Alter Bunnies” I also had the pleasure of inducting Sam Thiso and Jan Labuschangne into Border Nomads. I sincerely hope that you will enjoy the camaraderie and friendship with your Nomadic brothers.

We had to sadly say good bye to one of our Nomad stalwarts Doug Mckay. Doug passed away on the 3 Febraury and will be sorely missed by not only Nomads but also the golfing fraternity in the Border Region. He was a long serving member of the King Williams Town Golf Club and joined Nomads in 1999. Rest in Peace dear friend.

The 2012 National Team will be taking on the Old Boys and the Young Guns at our next monthly meeting. Get your game in top form team this will be a good warm up for Nationals that start a week later.

Last but not least thank you to our Border Teddy Bears Caroll, June and Sharon, for making sure we have an enjoyable and hassle free day. Big thanks to Uncle Jack and his troopers Russell and Peter for getting us out of the starting blocks.

Yours in Golf

Ivan Schutte
